July 31st

This will be my third try at this.  Using this separate key board is proving to be a nightmare.  When I reach over the key board to use the mouse, my arm has hit the delete key and I have lost the whole blog.  This will be my last try today to post.  

Last week we saw an interesting RV and trailer come into the park.  We believe that they were dog groomers, but they left the next day, so we didn't get to see them again.

On Monday we drove to Murrieta, where I had a mammogram done.  I was supposed to have a dexa scan for bone density done too, but they forgot to tell me not to take my multivitamin that day, so we had to reschedule it for tomorrow.  Tuesday they called that the mammogram was abnormal and I would need to schedule further testing, but, of course it's not likely we can do it while I'm there for the dexa scan.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they had a cancellation or can squeeze me in tomorrow, as the next appointment would be weeks away, and we'll be up at Silent Valley, so it would be even longer.  It's nerve wracking to have to wait that long.

Friday I called our dear friends Judy & Frank who were camped in Acton, CA near the Sand Fire (no I don't know why they NAME fires out here, but they always do).  I asked them to get out of the area while it was still possible to do so.  Frank had faith it wouldn't come there.  Saturday I called again as it had doubled in size and smoke was making the air quality very unhealthy.  He said they would be OK, and they stayed.  Sunday evening Judy called that they were part of a mandatory evacuation and were here.  I was so relieved to hear that.  They came over Monday night for a couple hours.  It was nice to see them before they put their van camper in storage here for two weeks.  Frank will stay in LA with a daughter while Judy is in San Francisco helping a daughter who just had surgery for cancer, and needs help with her small children at home.  Hopefully they will get back here before we leave for Silent Valley on 8/11.

Tuesday my sister Donna called to invite us to a picnic with her and George up at the Los Rio Rancho Park and Wildlife Conservancy in Oak Glen on Wednesday.  She insisted on bringing all the food, and it was wonderful.  We discovered as we drove up there, that it was about 10-15 degrees cooler there than down here.  Wow that was nice.  She served cold chicken salad AND roasted chicken, both yummy and baked beans, and home made molasses cookies.  She had found us a picnic table under a very old, and very large shade tree, and there was a marvelous breeze that kept it very pleasant.

 

 

  Good food, good company and good weather.  It doesn't get better than that!  The dogs enjoyed the day and barked at birds and other dogs.  They wore themselves out and slept all the way home.  Sure hope we get to go up there again this year with Donna & George.

I can't remember if we did anything special on Thursday, but Friday Millie went back to the vet for a follow up and she is doing fine.  I am brushing her teeth twice a day......but she's not happy about that.  We have Willie scheduled to get his teeth cleaned on Tuesday, so we are also brushing his teeth every day.......to get him used to it.  He's REALLY not happy about that!

Saturday it was hot, but we tried our luck at selling magnetic jewelry.  There were only five vendors out there, counting us, and since it was so hot, nobody did much business.  Afterwards, we went into the family center for lunch and candy bar bingo.  We won four candy bars, so that wasn't too bad.  When we got back to the RV, we discovered that the wind had ripped loose the tie down for the screen room and it was laying on one side.  We pulled it back up, and I held it in place until Jim could cut the end off the tie down and re tie it.  What an adventure that was.  

Later Saturday afternoon I went outside to get a few more pictures of what we see here in the park.

 This vintage car was towed in on a trailer, and is being kept in the shade of the awning of this RV. On the right is another camper who wants to keep his car cool too.  We considered trying to do this with our EZ Up, but it has been so windy we aren't sure we can keep the EZ Up from walking away!

Here is another RV I saw yesterday.  It is, of course, the End of the Trail, and we loved seeing it reproduced on the side of a Southwind Motorhome.  

 I also had to take a picture of this totally retro yellow RV.  This is the all new Winnebago Brave, which is an updated version of a very popular model from many years ago.  

I'm hoping I can meet the owners and see if I can see the inside of it soon.  

Later I saw this sign in the window of a huge blue Fleetwood Class A motorhome, and it amused me.   

 
Some people have a great sense of humor, and I think that is really important.  We need to be able to laugh at ourselves.

Last night we were invited over to Almita & Rueben's RV to play Mexican Train.  Half way through we took a break and she served chocolate cake and ice cream.  Almita & Rueben are a wonderful, energetic couple that have a marvelous outlook on life, and we always have a great time when we are with them.  They are kind, and loving people, and as you can see in the last picture, Rueben is a totally cool dude!!!!!  They will be leaving the park for a week on Monday, so we will look forward to their return next week.

Yesterday we had to take in our awning because of the wind, so today we went to pull it back out.  The strap we use to pull it out broke today.  Our friend Greg came over and helped Jim get it back out, so I gave him one of our magnetic anklets.  He was delighted to get it and said he's bring us anew strap when he gets a chance.  People are so nice in campgrounds.  They are always ready to help others out.  As I always have said, you meet the greatest people in these RV parks.  Well, before I mess up again and lose this, I'm going to post this blog entry NOW!!!!!

July 24th, addendum

I have to say, I can't imagine any way that our birthdays could have been better.  After lunch here yesterday, we drove down to the family center for candy bar bingo.  We would have walked, but it was already about 100 outside.  We found the last open parking space there.  We got good seats, even though the room was filling up fast.  Now here's the surprising part.  When Linda called for anyone with a birthday this week to come up front, besides us, a lady came up.  When Linda asked her what her name was, she said Donna..............and I recognized her voice as a friend from the Orange Good Sams camping club we used to belong to.  We had not seen her and her husband Hughie in YEARS!!!!  We were hugging and laughing when Linda said, "Hey, we need to get back to the games", so I said to Donna let's talk after this is over.  In all, we scored EIGHT candy bars.............a very good day!  After bingo was over, we walked over to their RV nearby.  The funny part is, when we were all in the club, they had a 5th wheel trailer.  I once asked Hughie when were they going to get a motorhome, and he said never.  He WAS a devoted 5er!  Now they have a nice 31 foot motorhome called a Leprechaun, by Coachmen.  It has a side hallway, with a huge window that was very nice.  Also, I'm a little jealous, as it has access to the bathroom both from the hallway, AND directly from the bedroom....very nice.  Then they came over to our house for a while.  I invited them to stay for dinner, but they already had reservations for dinner at the family center, so we invited them to come back and join us for birthday cake and homemade ice cream.  Almita & Rueben were coming too.  Amazingly, the temperature obliged by cooling down to a comfortable 80 or so with a lovely breeze, so we all sat out in the screen room and had a wonderful evening.

Later on the dogs came out to join the party!  Today, Donna & Hughie are coming over to play Mexican Train with us.  I'm hoping they can stay for dinner too.  They are going to another campground, Fisherman's Retreat, on Wednesday, 

but they might get back here again, before they have to leave to go back home to South Carolina.  We sure hope we get to see them again before they have to leave California though, so we can get caught up on everything that has been happening.  All in all, it was a truly marvelous day!!!!

Happy Birthdays to Us

This has been quite a week, but now we are at Wilderness Lakes, and, except for the heat, all is well.  Last Monday evening, July 18th, we took the dogs out to walk briefly, on our site.
Just wanted to include this picture of the moon from Sunday night, before I continued with my story of Monday night.

  When we went to the door to come back inside, it would NOT open.  We had not locked it, but there was no getting it to open, and we had to crawl in through the driver's door.  That might not seem like a big deal, but when we are camped, we store stuff on the two front seats, so it's not easy getting in that way.  I called our guy Benett, and he agreed to come over at 8 am Tuesday to see what was wrong.  It turned out that there was a broken piece inside the lock, so the whole lockset needed to be replaced.  He went down the hill to get it at his supplier, but they didn't have one the size we needed, so he had to order it, and it didn't arrive until after 1 pm on Wednesday, so we had to postpone coming down to Wilderness Lakes until Thursday, because we didn't want to travel and try to set up in the hottest part of the day.  Benett came up and replaced the lockset, and as I had promised, here is a picture of him.  He does great work and his rates are excellent.  

He comes when he says he will; he is efficient, and he is honest.  I couldn't recommend him more totally, if one needs RV service while in the area of Silent Valley, or Thousand Trails Idyllwild.    

 A few days ago, I discovered that the "N" key on my keyboard had stopped working.  On the suggestion of our dear friend Robert, we tried to clean under it, but that didn't help.  I called Staples, and found out the cheapest solution was a remote keyboard, attached with a USB cord.  It works, but I'm NOT loving it.  He suggested getting a new computer, and I know that I'm probably going to have to give in someday and get a new one, but I was told the new ones will not work with my Print Master software, and I hate to have to give that up!  

We got here around 9:45 am and found a big site, with 50 amp service way in the back.  In the past, we have never chosen to camp back this far, but this is probably the biggest site we've ever had here, and there is a nice shade tree beside us, and a huge long grassy strip behind this row of sites.  It is quite lovely.

 This shows the side of the RV and screen room, and of course Millie loves being outside.   The last picture shows the stretch of lawn behind the RVs.  It's very pleasant in this area, and this may become our favorite site!  


Later that afternoon we put the screen room up, and finished setting things up.....like the outside refrigerator, so we have extra freezer space for the yummy ice cream Jim makes.  Thursday was Willie's birthday, so he got a couple extra treats in honor of the day.  

Friday morning we had to take Millie to the vet to have her teeth cleaned, and the removal of a couple baby teeth that had never come out on their own.  Then we drove over to Great Clips so I could get a hair cut, and we picked up our mail.  They vet said we could pick her up at 3:30, and we were there right on time.  She was awake...........barely.  We got her home and she was huffing and snorting, which was her way of trying to get rid of the effects of the anesthesia.  I didn't dare give her water until she was fully awake.  Around 6 pm she was able to eat a little food.  As the evening progressed, she was able to go outside to "potty".  She spent most of the evening sleeping on me.  It was Jim's birthday, so I had made a nice pork roast in our Ninja.  Since it was much too hot to heat up the oven, (it got up to 109 outside) we bought a nice triple fudge chocolate cake and peanut butter cup ice cream  for his birthday dessert.  He really enjoyed all of that.  I let Millie have a tiny bit of the ice cream.

Today is my birthday, so Jim made my favorite breakfast, poached eggs on toast.  Later today we will be going over to Family center to play candy bar bingo.  Tonight Almita & Rueben are coming over for my birthday cake, lemon cake and strawberry ice cream, which Jim is making.  We don't give each other gifts anymore because we get what we need, or want when we can afford it. 

 
Millie loves being INSIDE the screen room.......but she also likes her alone time outside it too.  LOL.  
Tomorrow will be Millie's 3rd birthday.  We think it's pretty amazing that our four birthdays are in a row......but that is how it is.  It just proves to us that Willie and Millie were MEANT to be part of our family.  Today is "Clear the Shelters" day in southern California.  I heard on the news that over 50 shelters are offering pets to forever homes for the tiny fee of $20, and for seniors who adopt senior pets, there is NO charge.  That is so awesome.  We can't take another pet, but we sure hope lots of people will adopt furry friends to love and cherish.   

Please stay as cool as possible, and hydrate frequently.  Make sure you provide plenty of cool water for your pets....and again............NEVER leave your pets or people in closed cars even for a few minutes.  Plan ahead so you don't take risks.  Enjoy America, and be sure you register to vote in November. 

Silent Valley is Still Home for Us

Good Morning Dear Friends,

We thought we had come up here to get some rest and relaxation, but somehow that seems to have escaped us!  LOL.  I'm not complaining mind you.......we've been having a great time, most of the time.  First the sad news.  As many of you heard, by email, our very dear friend Wendy Miller passed away this past week from cancer.  We are very glad to know her suffering is over, and we know without a single doubt that she IS in the loving arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus.  Still it was very sad for US and for her large and loving family to not have her here anymore.

Here is Wendy last April (2015) sitting in our RV, trying to figure out how to teach US to use the tablet we got in March at the Escapees rally in Tucson, AZ.  She was always ready to help anyone who needed her help.  She had a heart as big as all outdoors, and was loved, and admired, and respected by everyone who knew her.  She could be out-spoken when she needed to be, but most of the time, she was kind and soft spoken.  She was never too busy to help someone in need.  And she always had a smile for others.

This next picture is, of course her loving husband Ric.  They were an amazing couple, and welcomed us into their church family the very first day we came to a service at their church.  Last year, when we visited them on our way back to California, they took us to a couple amazing places.

 As you can see, this is the Bosque Del Apache National Wildlife Refuge.  Inside the visitor center there is an amazing wildlife diorama that we took many pictures of.  If anyone wants to see all those pictures, let me know, and I can try to send you the folder with them in it.

Here are just a few pictures of the birds we saw there.  Some of the time Wendy was too winded to walk, so Ric drove us through the wet lands to let us see as much as possible.  They also took us to an interesting former military base near there, but I can't seem to find those pictures.  Our pictures, and our memories of Wendy will have to be our tribute of honor to a beautiful lady, who was an inspiration to ALL who knew her.  Farewell Wendy, you will never be forgotten.

On Monday we had Bennett (I don't know his last name) of Bennett Mobile RV Repair Service coming up to see why our water  heater was not lighting most of the time.   He found (and showed Jim) that he needed to replace the igniter ......of which he had a few in his truck, but of course, not the one we needed.  He promised to come back Tuesday around 3 pm to do the job, which he did, and now we again have a wonderful, and working water heater.  I'm sorry I don't have a picture of Bennett, but if you are camping up here at Silent Valley and need RV service, he is GREAT, and his prices are better than most!!!!!

Tuesday we met Ray & Carol in Banning for lunch at the Pizza Hut.....thanks again for the nice treat Ray!  We had a great time catching up, as we have talked often, but had not seen them since January of 2015, before we began our very long trip east.  Ray used to have an older Caddie for driving around in (not the car he tows behind his motorhome).  He decided it was time for something newer and, I suspect, more reliable. 

 Here they are outside Pizza Hut with their almost new, and very beautiful Ford Taurus.  I doubt if you can tell from this picture, but it has metallic flecks in the paint, and is very classy looking.
Sure hope they will get many wonderful years of travel in that fantastic car!

Wednesday we had to take Millie back to the vet in Menifee to have her bandage/cast removed from her right front foot.  Her foot looks great and is healing wonderfully.  We stopped to see our friends Almita and Rueben who had arrived a day or two before at Wilderness Lakes.  They had found a wonderful site next to one of the channels with a nice shade tree beside them.  We got to watch some of the water birds while we chatted.  After a while we left and came back to Banning and up the hill to Silent Valley again.  It's nice to find the temperature a little cooler up here.

I'm not sure what we did on Thursday, senior moment, but on Friday we drove to the Camping World store in San Bernardino as they were having a huge sale in celebration of the 50 years of Good Sam and of Camping World.  We bought a really neat folding table to use for many purposes, including for when we set up to sell our magnetic jewelry.  We also bought a protector cover for our loveseat.  Our loveseat is upholstered in leather, and we have always worried that the furry kids might tear it up with their claws, so we have tried to cover the seat with one blanket and the back with another.  You've seen it in many of the pictures taken on the "couch".  When we got it home, we found it was MUCH too short, from arm to arm.   But before that, we stopped at Wal-Mart for a few things I had forgotten to get earlier this week.  I found a nice shady spot to park under a tree (those are few and far between) so Jim and the kids could keep the windows open while I was inside the store.  I also got us an EZ Up 10' by 10' shade canopy we can use for picnics with family or to shade us when we set up in the park at Wilderness Lakes to sell jewelry. On the way into the store I spotted this and had to take some pictures.

As you can see, this car has a Purple Heart on the rear bumper and on the driver's door.  I don't know if this means he earned more than one, but even I know it means he was wounded in the service of our country.

This plaque was on the front of his car.  I didn't see the driver, but while I was in the store, Jim did see him drive out.


Getting back to the loveseat/couch cover, yesterday we drove back to Camping World yet again to get one in the "sofa" size.  It's a little too big, but we can make it work.....and the kids like it.  We also needed to replace the lovely quilt we had on our bed, as the dogs claws had done quite a number on it.  We found what we wanted online, but none of the local Wal-Mart stores had it in stock, so we ordered it online Friday, and after going to Camping World, we drove down to the Hemet Wal-Mart store where it could be delivered in one day.  I don't know why it couldn't have been sent to the store in Beaumont.............but that would have supposedly taken a week!  We, of course got the matching pillow shams, and are very happy with this too.

As you might be able to see, it also goes well with the darker blue valances on the two windows in the bedroom.  Our friend Mary made them for us from the bed skirt that went with a previous comforter we had.  That's all the pictures and news for today except that Jim is shampooing the carpets in here today, so I need to take the furry kids outside for a while.......soon.

Just one more thing I would like to talk about.  Many of the area shelters and having "Clear the Shelter" Days this week and next.....and we are VERY much in favor of adopting shelter pets, but we do feel we should mention one more thing about adopting pets.  Adopting is wonderful, and I believe you would never regret doing it.  But please remember that this is meant to put an animal into a loving FOREVER home.  Please do NOT adopt a pet unless you are prepared to commit to this.  It would be cruel to adopt a pet, and then decide you can't keep him.  Many shelter animals have been abused and have NEVER known a loving home, so it will take time, and in many cases, some extra effort on your part to teach this animal that you will never hurt him or abandon him again.  I can assure you, it IS worth the effort.  I sincerely hope some of you WILL adopt a shelter animal, but I want you to do it for the right reasons, and above all else, with the willingness to make it work for both you and your new four legged family member.

Saturday, July 9th

Hello Everyone, 

I hope you have all had a better week than we have had this week.  It started out just fine.  July 4th was pleasant, and best of all quiet!  The furry kids were not terrified by any fireworks, and we all went to bed fairly early.  Tuesday we had a call from Carol & Ray, and we made plans to meet them next Tuesday for lunch in Banning.  

Some time Tuesday night Millie must have stepped on what we thought might be a fox tail, that became embedded in her right front foot.  It didn't become obvious until Wednesday morning.  I cleaned her foot with peroxide, shaved it and saw that it looked infected.  I lanced it and drained the wound and tried to find the offending object without success, so we called her doctor's office in Menifee.  They could have seen her that night around 7 pm, but that would have meant leaving her there overnight for surgery in the morning, and us driving back up this hill after dark......not an option we wanted to have to do.  So instead, we drove down there first thing Thursday morning.  More on this in a little while.

The rest of that day went quite well.  Donna & George came up to visit and we had a really nice afternoon.  We gave them the NuWave oven we had, since we had bought a smaller one for here in the RV.  They had brought up pictures of their daughter Lynne's wedding.....very nice.  They also gave us the information on the You Tube public service announcements their grandson made about adopting shelter pets.  I shared it online (priceless pets PSA....some weird guy 45) and then my son  let me know about the PSA he made a while ago.  It can be seen on You Tube with the link "Adopt, Don't Shop".  If you didn't get my email to see these videos before, please do so soon.  I hope everyone will give serious thought to adopting a shelter pet and giving one or more animals a loving forever home.  Both of our dogs were adopted.  We believe shelter pets just KNOW that they have been saved, and they give more love than we could have ever hoped for.  When you buy a pet from a pet store, you just encourage over-breeding by puppy mills.  As my son put it in his PSA, when you adopt a shelter pet, you not only save that animal's life; you also give another animal a chance by freeing up a space at a shelter for the next animal picked up.  

Also, if you have any pets that have not been spayed or neutered, please, please reconsider and have them taken care of.  There are already way too many loving animals being euthanized because there are not enough shelter spaces for them all.  Please don't let your pets reproduce unless you want to be adding to this huge problem.  Thank you.

Back to the saga of Millie's injury.  We took both dogs with us when we went to Menifee.  The doctor checked Millie in, and since we had withheld her breakfast, he was able to do her surgery later that morning.  We took Willie and left......with about 3 1/2 hours to wait.  We stopped at Stater Brothers and picked up picnic supplies, and headed over to Wilderness Lakes.  We found a picnic table in the shade of the trees, and settled in.  By the time we finished our lunch........the sun had shifted and we were no longer in the shade.  We packed up and moved to another table, and had shade for another hour.  Then we had to move again for one more hour.  Finally we packed up and headed back to the Vet's office.  On the way there, we got a call from them saying Millie would be ready to pick up in about 45 minutes.  I explained that since we had been out in the heat, we were already on the way and would be there in about three minutes, but would wait patiently in their waiting area until she was ready to go.  They said OK.  When we got there, we took care of the paperwork and the bill.  The doctor came out and showed us the wood splinter he took out of her foot.  He gave us the liquid antibiotic to give her twice a day, and then we left with her......wearing one of those collars that look like a lamp shade.  By the time we got to the car she had shaken off the collar and settled down to sleep on my lap.....after giving me many, many kisses!  I do love doggie kisses.  She is recovering nicely and will go back on Wednesday to remove the dressings and stitches.  She is slowly getting her energy back, but mostly sits on my lap or next to me on the couch.  I love having her sit with me, but I hate for it to be because she is hurting.  She hasn't played with her "pinkie" her favorite toy, since she got hurt.  I bought her two pairs of stretch socks with rubberized soles in hopes she won't pick up any more splinters or other things that can hurt her again.  

Friday we got our NuWave Oven out and roasted an 8 pound turkey breast for dinner.  Yummy.  Now we get to enjoy turkey sandwiches for several more days.  To us, that's the best part of roasting a turkey, and the NuWave does it without heating up the house.  All good.

Happy Independence Day one and all!

Hello Dear Friends,

It has been a very busy week here.  We have been making lots of magnetic jewelry, in every possible size, in preparation for the Arts and Crafts Sale held here on this past Saturday.  On Wednesday Brad and his son came up to see if they could help us with our towing brake, and he found and fixed the problem.  We asked him to look at our water heater that was not lighting most of the time......but of course, it worked perfectly every time he tried it. 

 The sale ran all day long, but we only stayed from about 6 am until 2 pm.  It was very hot that day, and for the first six hours we were at a table that only got partial shade.  I heard that some of the vendors got there between 2 am and 4 am to get the best tables.  OMG.  The last couple hours we moved to a vacant table that was in the shade.  A local Boy Scout troop was selling pizzas that they baked out behind the restaurant, as a fund raiser, so we bought one for lunch.  Sadly, I think they were rushing to fill the orders TOO quickly, as ours had a crust that was no where near done!  Alas, we made our donation.  Anyway, sales wise, it turned out to be the best day we've ever had with our jewelry.  Best of all, we made friends with a wonderful couple who stopped by, just to sit a minute at our table.

Here is a picture I took today of them, and the one on the right is the back view of their lovely Southwind motorhome.  We went over to their home Saturday to take her the jewelry she ordered, and ended up chatting for two more hours.  Yesterday they came to our house for a nice Sunday dinner.  I made BBQ chicken and roasted potatoes in my Turbo Cooker, baked squash and tossed salad, and for dessert I made Oreo Ice Cream Pie.  After dinner we played Mexican Train until they had to go home.  It was a great day. 

 Last week I posted pictures showing the park with nice open spaces.....but by Friday this place had really filled up!

I doubt if there is a single vacant site here now!  The folks across the street from us have a screen room and have a Yellow Nape Amazon parrot there with them.  The only time we've ever seen so many people here before was for Halloween, which is a MAJOR event here every year.

There are many beautiful, large and small RVs here, as well as many folks camping in tents and truck campers of all sizes and styles.  
 
The people have really gotten into the holiday spirit, including this man who decided to dress formally for the day!  

It's only about 10:45 am and already many folks are gathering to begin grilling and cooking together.  It's supposed to be a little cooler today.....maybe mid 80's, so Jim said he might grill outside too.  The furry kids have had to stay inside when we were gone, as it has been much too hot to keep them outside with us.  The best thing about being here for this holiday is that they do NOT allow any fireworks in this park.  Please remember that your pets, especially your dogs, are very sensitive to the noise from fireworks, and can be terrified by them.  Please do not leave pets outside if there will be people setting off any kinds of fireworks in your area.  We invested in a thunder shirt, which we found at Pet Smart, for Willie.  It does wonders for helping to keep him calm during stressful times, such as thunder storms.  He is truly terrified of fireworks though, and even the thunder shirt isn't enough to calm him if anyone sets them off.  Tonight we will be here inside with the "kids" even though we are definitely hoping there will be nothing to worry about.

As most if you know, California is among the states that have had major droughts, and therefore, very, very high fire danger.  This is an area of trees and dry brush that could burn in a heartbeat of anyone is careless with fireworks or camp fires.
